5th report on the world nutrition situation : nutrition for improved development outcomes
This report is the fifth in a series from the UN Standing Committee on Nutrition (SCN) on the nutritional status of populations in developing countries. It finds that malnutrition is decreasing steadily in much of the world and that several countries in sub-Saharan Africa have been able to reduce malnutrition rates under difficult circumstances. However, the rate of decline in malnutrition outside sub-Saharan Africa is slowing and for sub-Saharan Africa, at a regional level, nearly all the nutrition indicators are moving in the wrong direction.
The report emphasises that reducing malnutrition is central to the achievement of the millennium development goals (MDGs). In particular, it leads to increased economic productivity and greater resilience to shocks (Goal 1), and better educational outcomes (Goal 2), as well as enhancing women’s empowerment (Goal 3). Good nutritional status is also vital for improving child survival and maternal health (Goals 4 and 5), and combating communicable diseases (Goal 6), by increasing malarial survival rates and delaying the onset of AIDS in HIV-positive individuals. The paper further argues that a nutrition perspective can be used beyond the MDGs to strengthen a range of development mechanisms and instruments, including poverty reduction strategies, health sector reform, governance, human rights, and trade liberalisation.
